MSDS (Maternity Services Data Set)

Patient-level data set that captures information about activity carried out by Maternity Services relating to mother and baby(s), from the first booking appointment until mother and baby(s) are discharged from the services. The Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS) is the national information standard for data relating to NHS-funded maternity services. It sets out requirements for the collection and submission of operational and clinical data relating to each stage of the maternity care pathway, thereby enabling secondary uses of the data for such purposes as commissioning, payment, planning, outcomes monitoring and addressing health inequalities. Providers of NHS-funded maternity services are required to submit data to NHS Digital on a monthly basis. As a secondary uses data set MSDS re-uses clinical and operational data for purposes other than direct patient care. It defines the data items, definitions and associated value sets extracted or derived from local information systems and sent to NHS Digital for analysis purposes.
